I really liked this book, the dystopian concept was very cool (and lowkey something I could picture actually happening in the distant future of humanity). It was a very intriguing story, and was more about the aftermath of the situation (the uprising), rather than the situation itself, which was a very interesting concept. There was also a good mystery in this story, it had me trying to guess what happened the whole time, and I did not see that coming to be honest.

I don’t want to say “this book wasn’t for me”. I am an avid science fiction and dystopian reader. I’ve enjoyed Roth’s other works. This book was meant for me, but reading it felt like a chore. This is one of the few instances where the writing was good quality, but the story was so boring. It took me over a month to read the 200 some odd pages, when I could normally finish that in a day or too. I didn’t care about the characters. I didn’t care about the resolution. It all fell very flat for me

This book finds a new story in the dystopian genre by focusing on a time after the first dystopian regime has fallen and in the midst of a second dystopian regime. Sonya is living in the Aperture, a fenced in section including an intersection and four apartment blocks, where the remaining members of the Delegation and their family members have been contained since the Uprising. When she is given a way out, she finds out more about her family, the Delegation, and the current Triumvirate than she ever wanted to know. This book is engaging and so, so thought-provoking.

This book took me a while to get into. But WOW. Once I got into it?! Man. I flew thru it. I loved the story and I couldn’t put it down. I’m a sucker for dystopian fiction, what can I say.

Throughout my read, I really felt Sonya, as she was telling her story.

Sonya’s characterization was interesting to me, I really liked seeing her change throughout the story.
The plot may be a bit slow but you really feel immersed - it is also well set up. It was a great story: the more you read, the more you understood both the old and the new regime, the connexions, the twists.
It is also quite interesting to show the “after the fall” of a dystopian system, instead of the revolution, because so much is still left to do: how do you deal with the supporters of the old system, how do you deal with trauma, how do you deal with the rebuilding?
And is the new regime better than the previous one? How do you define that? So many questions :)

I personally really liked the end, I felt it was quite fitting both for the story and Sonya.
