I heard the author on a podcast I like and I really enjoyed his voice and point of view - his writing is very fun.

I didn't mean to read this one, but I couldn't stop myself. Simon Doonan is just wonderful and funny and campy. This is the anti-fashionista's manifesto.

The author is funny but this must be the only non fiction book I've read where I didn't learn anything

Fun and funny tribute to trailblazers, disguised as a fashion guide.

Best quote:
"We do not need [french people's] help [to be fab]. They need our help and our Cheetos and our vulgarity."

“Nobody is judging you. Some people may not even notice you. Most people will be enjoying you.”

“You would do well to think of it as a movie production wherein you have two star credits: female lead and costume designer.”

“The impulse to surround yourself with like-minded folk in like-minded frocks signifies the end of civilization. I want every social event to be like the happening in the movie Midnight Cowboy, or better yet, the party scene from Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.”

Started this book about 6 years ago and just picked it back up to finish.
Just as entertaining today as when I first began it.
A fun, witty and insightful read about fashion and styling, with a playful snarkiness.

A funny and useful read about being fabulous without slavishly following trends. I was really pleasantly surprised to read a personal style book that wasn't about looking younger, thinner, or trendier!

This book was full of slut-shaming, "Gypsy is a synonym for romantic", and "be your own person but if you don't shave your legs you're repulsive" ideas. Unfortunate.

The adorable stories about Doonan's marriage to Jonathan Adler are what saved this book from one star, but I doubt I'll read another of Doonan's books.

Not dissing people who do read books like this on a regular basis (why though?) but I only read stuff like this when I'm feeling shit and want to rest. Simon Doonan is funny, irreverent, and has a healthy respect for women, who are mostly the target audience for this book. And he loves his mum.

Some parts (straight on up asking people what gender they are? not having off days from your eccentric glamourous lifestyle?) tend to make me raise my eyebrows, but I guess being an eccentrically glamourous person is all about not being a wallflower type and not too much recommended for introverts for long periods of time? Idk.

It was fun, though. With laugh out loud moments.
