This book is lots of fun! It started out trending a little “Masculine Author”, y’know the kind… but it was a brief blip in an otherwise very amusing book. I loved the potshots taken at popular gamer culture, especially as someone who is Terminally Online™️ and into D&D, MTG, video games, etc 🫡 I would rate this higher if it was a little less formulaic and repetitive, and used the word “plummeted” less. But none of those things detract from my enjoyment of the book at all! They’re just things that keep me from rating it higher - but I can’t wait to read the next one!! I just have to wait until it even appears at ALL on Libby let alone being able to put a hold on it!

Fun! Devastating! Well-rounded and loveable characters! The horror of corporations and becoming naught but a tool in its machine! Keeping your humanity and kindness in impossible situations! The horrific loss of life for both the “good guys” and the “monsters” they must kill to survive, and the morality of it all!  Funny and clever! I loved it!

Dungeon Crawler Carl is first-person pop-culture-referencing easygoing light adventure in the style of Ernest Cline's Ready Player One, Dennis E. Taylor's Bobiverse or books from John Scalzi or Andy Weir. It's a first LitRPG book I've read - perhaps not that extreme but a fun introduction to genre anyway. LitRPGs are a bit like games that you read, containing statistics, skill levels and scores for the main characters. I was a bit sceptical about the genre but it ended up being good entertainment.

My husband plays DnD and recommended this book to me (I don't play but due to a lack of time, not interest!)
He has recommended some weird books to me so I went in with apprehension but LOVED IT!

Any book that has a cat as a main character is always going to be a winner in my eyes. Combined with utter silliness and the feel of playing a levelled video game, I was obsessed.
It's the first time in YEARS that I've read a book in the space of a day.

It is quite gory in places but 'video game' gore as opposed to 'oh god I'm going to be sick' gore.

Princess Donut is my queen.

This was my first LitRPG, but I really enjoyed it. I also laughed out loud so many times while reading! Highly recommend!

Oh ok, now I understand what a LitRPG book is really about.
I was hesitant to start this type of book as I thought it wouldn't really be for me.
But after reading The Cradle series I want to start another series or standalone before deciding if I want to continue these types of books.  Man, I am so glad I chose to listen to BookTubers and Discord and started reading Dungeon Crawler Carl.  I couldn't put this book down.  I wanted to know what the next room, monster, boss, and other crawlers had in store for Carl and of course Princess Donut.
What did I like about this book?  The characters, the concepts, the world building, and Princess Donut and her interactions with Carl.  The characters are diverse with our main characters seeing a good amount of development and advancement during this first book.  The concept...well I can't really get into it without spoiling the beginning of the book.  Trust me it is interesting. The world building - well first it is not such as building but again spoilers, but interesting enough to continue with the series.
What didn't I like about the book?  Really, there was not much to dislike about this book. But personally, I couldn't recommend this book to younger readers.  This is due to some adult jokes and language.  So, reader or parent beware.
