First up this audio was fantastic! I loved the narrators. I got teary eyed at one point during this.
If we are going to have fiction around politics in YA this is exactly what I would want to read. About kids fighting to vote for the first time and finding their way.

Also how have I never read Brandy Colbert before? I can't wait to read more by her.

CW: Voter suppression, death of family member (off page)
I received an audio arc from Libro.FM in exchange for an honest review.
medium-paced

In The Voting Booth, Marva is 18 years old, and a first time voter. Raised by parents who taught her that voting shouldn’t be a privilege, but rather it is a right, and she has spent months ringing doorbells and registering voters.

Duke is ready to get his first voting experience behind him so that he can get to his band performance. He runs into a multitude of problems, much like the true story I mentioned above. After cutting classes, Marva spends all day with Duke, helping him do one thing: vote!

Author Brandy Colbert delves into the issues that face us today. Written with the YA audience in mind, it will be a valuable tool for first time voters as well as for people who have or haven’t been exercising their vote for years.

We must understand the importance of opening our eyes to see that voter suppression is rampant in our country. Please register to vote by mail, even if you don’t plan to mail your ballot. There will be drop boxes in many locations or you can take it to your polling place. Our ballots are like gold!

NUGGET GAINED: Tell one, tell all, voting is our right, let’s treat it that way! VOTE!

Thank you Libro.fm, Brandy Colbert, and Dreamscape media for my ALC of The Voting Booth.

Have libro.fm version via ACL, but read e-book.

Spoilersome mild to moderate language

3.5 stars. This book was basically an extended “meet cute” story. The author wove some substantive themes (police profiling, gang violence, loss) into the YA rom-com in a way that felt authentic, rather than forced. A good, lighter read.

The Voting Booth is an adorable YA romance. It follows two high schoolers and uses their connection to discuss the importance of voting and civic engagement. It is an easy read for anyone looking to get out of a reading slump or looking to make some quick progress on a reading goal.

The only thing that stopped me from giving it a five is….my age. As an adult, the writing style and even the words written are better suited for a younger audience. This would make a great gift for a middle school or high school student.

This was so cute & fun!! I really enjoyed all the bits about elections, politics & voting. It stressed the importance of each persons votes while showing different stances and perspectives! It was very well done and I am here for a YA book to motivate the youth to get out there and vote! The secondary storyline was super random and unnecessary but very wholesome and made me laugh at times! Such a light-hearted read that I really liked!!

This book was SO CUTE from beginning to end and I think any kid on the fence abput voting would benefit from reading it, too. But really, SO CUTE. I love the depth it managed for what is basically a single-day story.

YES: an important examination of civic responsibility for teens that clearly outlines why it is so important to be involved in politics at their age, in a voice they can understand. A cute love story keeps them invested. The discussion of what it means to be Black, Black enough, and the safety of Black people in this country is also included and super important. Overall, an excellent read!
