The main storyline was intriguing, the MC’s pettiness and wit was fun to read (very reminiscent of my teenage self), and the side characters had fun personalities. I enjoyed the first half of this book, but found myself skimming the second half because I didn’t feel any significant character beats or moments. I would’ve liked more scenes where the MC and love interest are significantly/tangibly supporting each other, beyond exchanging supportive words and the occasional gift. I also desired closure for some loose ends, like the drama teacher’s stage, are they going to do the Dance again if this one was such a success, how did other characters’ Dance matches go (then again, the MC is shown to not be that perceptive). Even though heavy topics were mentioned in this book, I desired more depth and description.

CW: the book deals with grief due to the past death of parent, and has a character whose brother is undergoing cancer treatment, the protagonist's father is described as a germophobe and seems to be obsessed with healthy living and eating to the point it affects his child (potential ed trigger I guess)

I think, story and character-wise the would have been a solid 4 stars but the little touches of weirdness are what make it a 5 star for me. The protagonist is so deliciously petty that he has 5 reasons to hate his love interest and one of them is that the guy ate a banana without removing the stringy bits! Also, the whole subplot about the hole at the theatre stage that nobody wants to fix and the weird drama teacher who lets his students choose to be addressed as either Mr., Ms. or Comrade will live rent free in my head. Like, what more can one ask for?

Cute quick YA read! Both predictable and adorable haha.
