This is a mixed bag. It seemed like the writer was torn between trying to do a semi-serious exploration on the inner psyche of a murderer and an overly gorey mean spirited slasher in the style of Terrifier.

The split is the only reason this is getting a three because there were some good bits of character writing but it was too mean spirited for my tastes.

I'd Watch This Movie

Another winner from Mr. Smith. He artfully creates a slasher novel with the requisite theme (31 kills by Halloween). The story crackles along and we have the usual kills and Gore, but what really made this book special was the feeling of tragedy and sadness throughout. Our killer has a tragic reason for killing and you just can't help feeling sorry for him. In theory, it should be a bit cliche, but Smith is talented enough to avoid this. The final twenty or so pages evoked a sadness that was surprisingly effective. HIGHLY recommended. Keep em coming, Bryan Smith!

This book was equal parts hilarious and brutal, which is exactly what I want from a slasher!

What I love about slasher is that they are often over the top and ridiculous, and this book has plenty of that! I mean have you ever read a horror book was a twerking and Nicki Minaj reference? Because I now have! Also here’s a quote that stands out to me and made me laugh: “He had a building full of ripe-smelling corpses downstairs. Cleanliness wasn’t exactly one of his priorities these days.”

I enjoyed the multiple POVs used in this book, just before each of the killings/set of killings the reader gets to go into the mind of the victim. Personally I enjoyed this because you got to know the victim a bit before they were killed off so you actually had some feeling for them, rather than just a complete random person being killed off.

Now the killer in this has to be one of the most messed up and disturbing killers I’ve read about. He’s completely insane but also so calculating! Some of the things he does to his victims are truly disturbing!

Overall a really fun read that had me completely gripped, I had to know how this nightmare was going to end! I’ll definitely be reading more from Smith!
