Another summer, another great Elin Hilderbrand book! The Five-Star Weekend features Hollis Shaw, influencer, style and home guru and her four best friends from different phases of her life meeting up at her summer house on Nantucket. Well, three best friends and one follower who she's never even met! Hollis is hoping this weekend will be just the thing she needs after her husband died seven months ago. She's also invited her 20-something daughter, Caroline, along to film the weekend for her website.

I really enjoyed this read. I loved the character of Hollis and the descriptions of her house and the food she made had me salivating! I would love to see pics of everything! The other characters, Tatum, Dru-Ann, Brooke, and Gigi all had their annoying and endearing moments, but in the end I loved them all. This book really speaks to the power of friendship and forgiveness and how we change as people as time goes on. I really liked the idea of bringing together completely different friends and just seeing how they react to each other.

This was a much better read, for me, than the past two summer books (Hotel Nantucket and Golden Girl). Definitely pick this one up. It's a perfect beach read!

I’ve never read from this author, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. From the cover, I thought it would be a lighthearted summer read, but there were actually some pretty heavy topics discussed (I mean, it starts with the death of her husband).

The story focuses on five different women - the main character, Hollis, and four important people from different phases of her life. You get to know each of them and their backgrounds, and, of course, they’re all going through their own shit.

I found myself relating to Brooke the most. She had a lot of anxiety and felt like too much for people. Her marriage was meh (her husband was disgusting), and I enjoyed her character arc.

I cared the least about Dru-Ann, but I understand her importance to the story. I enjoyed Tatum’s story, and I’m glad we had some representation for a happy marriage!

We also got to know Caroline, Hollis’s daughter, more. I like that she had her own storyline. It was important to both her and Hollis’s journeys.

Now let’s talk about Gigi. DA FUQ?!
I’m so mad at how her story played out. It was unrealistic for Hollis to react the way she did. To know your husband was having an affair for over a year, and that person manipulated herself into your life. Then she entered your home under false pretenses. Not only would I not keep that information to myself, I would tell her to get the fuck out of my house immediately. She was way too forgiving way too fast, and I truly don’t understand why. I get if the author wanted to make that forgiveness part of her journey, but to have that immediate reaction just pissed me off. And the fact that she didn’t tell her friends?? I understand her not telling her daughter, but her friends??!! Doesn’t make sense.

One thing I am happy about is that the book didn’t become a second chance romance between Hollis and Jake. That would’ve tainted the story a lot for me, and I was nervous it was going to go in that direction.

This book has a slow start but definitely picked up. I loved the characters and how different they all were, but somehow it just worked. Also love a book about female friendship. The way secrets were revealed was interesting, but sometimes the build up took awhile.

lighthearted

I wasn’t as invested in this one as I have been some of her other books but I still cried at the end. Brooke has my heart!!!

Maybe 3.5 stars.
Elin’s books are light and fun for sure. But not necessarily captivating for me. I could have turned this book off (audiobook) at any time and probably not cared about what happened to the characters. Until the last mmmm maybe quarter of the book when I just wanted to know how it ended.
