I've read this before, a long time ago, and I wasn't disappointed by my re-read. This book truly is a classic. It is easy to read (it was written for children after all) and can be finished in almost one sitting. What I REALLY loved was the forward for this particular edition. It has some great insights into the story and was VERY well written.

It’s cute and fun but to me the movie with Judy Garland is like…way better.

Stuff just happens. Dorothy is a goody goody who does manslaughter twice with no "what have I done". The naughtiest she gets is splashing someone, just turns out that to a witch, water is the equivalent of petrol to a human. My favourite bits were the bits not in the movie so in that way you could say it's a victim of its own success, but I feel like if Dorothy had been more of a Huck Finn and less of an Oliver Twist I'd still like her no matter how many times I heard her story. I feel like goody goody kids are written more for the parent than the child.
