Upon re-reading this, I was honestly surprised by how clever some of L. Frank Baum's writing is. There was depth to the characters that I didn't expect, and I appreciated the idea that all of them had what they needed but simply couldn't believe it about themselves.

There were also a lot more decapitations than I remembered.

If you can find a copy with the original art, it is pretty amazing.

I didn't expect to like this better than the classic movie, but this was actually funny. And it was written over a hundred years ago. I don't usually go for stuff that old, but Baum knew what he was doing. This also reads so much like a classic JRPG that I had to go google if there was a Wizard of Oz JRPG out there...and there actually is, for the Nintendo DS. I'm sure nobody actually bought it.

The scarecrow was my favorite in this version. I also liked how short it is, despite its page count. I could probably whip through this whole series in a week if I set my mind to it!
