Illetve a nők esetèben annak totális hiànya. Emiatt elvesztettem a tanulsàgot is.

Very often, we deem dreams infallible - a mere stone’s throw away. The reality, as Anna discovers in this story, could not be more different. She is forced to deal with imperfect people - who pull apart what she regarded as a perfect plan. Besides being an excellent and moving tale, Von Arnim sets the scene with such style and elegance - Kleinwalde practically glitters off the page. Each character is so carefully crafted, they cannot but be memorable. Overall, The Benefactress is a heartwarming tale, laden with words of wisdom, and written with delicate artisty.

Overall a witty, amusing and enjoyable read, but it confirmed to me that there is no point in reading von Arnim's novels to the very last page. I would have been much happier with Enchanted April, and with this one, had the last chapter not happened, or maybe the last two chapters. For similar reasons, too
Spoiler—both books follow the same recipe which consists in letting the female characters develop on their own after escaping from societal & family constraints in some way or other; studying, with the utmost care and tender irony, how their character unfolds in this new environment; and then throwing them (or throwing them back) into a stifling marriage, all but suggesting a man was what they had been missing all along, effectively negating all previous character work and reflections on solitude and independence. In both books the denouement felt rushed and rather punitive towards the female protagonists. All the more disappointing considering how delightful von Arnim's writing is in the rest of the novel.

All the wit and obvious love of nature one expects from Von Arnim. A young protagonist, Anna, yearns for freedom. Bored with the social life that she leads with her sister in law she receives her independence via her uncle in his will. Moves to pomerania, takes in some women down on their luck, horrid, grasping women. Loved the Princess, she was fab! Eventually meets love of her life. So much for freedom, though I don't believe that marriage is a prison it only depends on your choice and Axel is lovely, hard working and caring

3.5 I absolutely adore the writing. I'd say if you're a fan of Elizabeth to read this book but if you haven't read her yet I suggest starting with The Enchanted April. This book was beautiful at the beginning but the second half was extremely dramatic and unbelievable. All the characters were flawed which I really enjoyed. And I thought the character growth was pretty good until the end when some things just seemed too rushed. The story is a 3 star for me and the writing is a 5 star.
