TW: abuse
Yeah, I had to shelve this one.
The beginning sex scene was awful and completely unnecessary. "I have to say goodbye to you, so let's do it two more times". I used to love Philippa Gregory's novels but now they seem a little raunchy for me.
Then, there's the abuse scene which is completely unnecessary. Why would anyone want to read about a wife getting whipped and then beaten? Even though I am past my ptsd, the last thing that I would ever want to read is a woman getting beaten and whipped.
Should I even bother with the rest of this series?

One of many
This is much the same as her other novels -if you like them, you'll like this one.
It is either the story of a feminist hero or a preachy piece of propaganda... Depending on you point of view. Either way, Gregory is as good a writer as we've all come to expect.

Really enjoyed getting to know Katherine Parr better. Turns out what we were told about her in school was pretty much rubbish!
this book takes place in the 1540s and taming of the shrew didnt come out until 1590. just wanted to say that!

This was okay, and I enjoyed most of it, but there were quite a few times where I found myself irritated and annoyed by Kateryn Parr. I would have liked it more if she was a more sympathetic narrator, but oh well. There were also a few scenes that I felt were thrown in just for shock factor and didn’t sit quite right with me, but still a fairly good read.
This book in the series was actually much more easier than the previous books in the series. The story flowed much more easily.
I really like how our perspective of the same characters changes as we read from different points of view. Henry, in this book, was actually much more likeable than the other books in the beginning but towards the end, I was really disgusted with him.
The description of the time period, the power dynamics and how the thoughts and views constantly changed as Henry changed his opinions was really interesting to read.

Another excellent book by Philippa Gregory. Katherine Parr was a pretty amazing woman.
I know Katherine Parr survived Henry VIII, but in this book she also singlehandedly ensures the reform of the church, sets up Elizabeth I to be the perfect queen, is able to outwit an entire court, and talk the obviously mad king into anything. It was a little over the top.
