A collection of darkly comic short stories by the late great Hilary Mantel, The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher and Other Stories doesn’t miss. There are tales of avoiding an acquaintance, getting trapped in an unfortunate event, violence, and in the titular story, a would-be assassin gains access to a neighbour’s house by posing as a plumber. Mantel’s writing is tender and funny, as well as extremely bleak. I enjoyed every moment.
