This a good story about a boy and his dogs. If you ever wanted to experience hunting for coons, this book will give you that. The experience is complete with the good as well as the bad.
I'm not sure how I never read this book as a kid! A wonderful story with a good rhythm and message of hard work, loyalty, and love.
About a year and a half ago a friend encouraged me to re-read this book when I admitted that all I remembered about it was the disturbing scene with the Pritchard boy. She said it was a beautiful story, so I decided I should re-read it. I just did and it is a great story. I enjoyed it and felt like I have a very different view of the book now. My girls are going to start reading it next and I hope that I will be able to help them see the beautiful story and not stop short at just remembering the uncomfortable parts.

I found myself tuning out a bit. I feel like I definitely would have liked it more as a kid. But it did make my cry at the end, even though I knew what would happen.
