This book ruined my life in the 5th grade. A heartbreaking tale of a boy experiencing love and loss. Truly wonderful what it does to the psyche of a child.
I read this sometime in elementary school. Absolutely devastating to me at the time( and still today). Such a wonderful story though! :)
“The story went on to say that only an angel could plant the seeds of a red fern, and that they never died; where one grew, that spot was sacred.”
Recently I've been battling raccoons outside our house. Raccoons always remind me of the 'coon dogs in this book. Sadly, nearly everyone I've mentioned it to has "never heard of it" and given me a blank look. How can this be? Was this only big in Madison, WI? I thought it was required reading. Specifically I remember my elementary school teacher reading it to a mesmirized class. Which really only makes me sadder that more people around here haven't read it.
Perhaps I'll have to reread it...

I last read this book in third grade and cried. I think I loved it more now, cried again. The reason it doesn’t get 5 stars is I had an issue with the timeline. Initially I thought he had the dogs for years, but looking back it’s only one season? Doesn’t seem that the dogs could be big enough in less that a year for all this?
I remember sitting in my room over one summer, sometime in elementary school and being completely engrossed by this book. It was a book that made me truly sad that it ever ended.
It was very sad at the end. A lot of description of hunting. My boys liked it!
The last time I read this book was when my 4th grade teacher read it to me, so I thought I'd try it on my own. It wasn't quite as magical as when I was 8, but the dog-lover in my still really enjoyed it. It was MUCH more religious than I remember, which is probably fine for most readers.
My 4th grade teacher read this book to us and, much to my chagrin, I bawled like a baby about those dogs. Excellent book.
