I mean.
It was alright.
I was bored for the majority of it.
Where as both this and Deal with the Elf King are very predictable, this didn't have the magical whimsy that DwtEK had.
This was so painfully predictable that it just made the book drag while reading it.
The first part of the book and the second felt very disconnected to each other.
And again a power was introduced and never really used? With DwtEK it was the true name thing and with this it was the ability to smell smoke when someone was lying. I can't say why I assume she has this ability without giving a spoiler. But it was never really... Used.
Speaking of power. There was a lot of magically potential here that just was never reached.
Katria (ugh. What a name. Why.), was very annoying. Very woe is me, very pessimistic.
I don't mind pessimistic characters usually, but eh. On Katria is was annoying.
I don't understand why Katria never left her family either. She would go away on her horse every morning, dream about leaving and then.... Go back? I do understand that it is hard to escape your abusers, but she goes from being too frightened to ever really leave to going into a carriage and declaring she won't be a servant ever again and will never love again (🙄 this trope though). It just felt disjointed. Like there was no, coming into her bravery.
Just, yep. In the carriage.
Overall.... I was majorly underwhelmed.
The romance was nice I guess.
The Final battle was interesting, but I was glad when the book ended.
