Beautifully written, heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. The first character we’re introduced to was Melody, born the same year I was. I hadn’t realized how much that would make me invested in the story…the stories through time.

I had never heard of this book before and picked it up from a second-hand store because I liked the cover art. But as soon as I finished reading, all I could think was how lucky I was to have discovered this. It's such a beautiful exploration of the way class impacts our interactions with others, as well as just how important one's personal history can be. I loved its prose-like writing style so much, and I think such a style did a great job portraying the points of view of various characters in the book. Can't wait to read more of Woodson's writing! I think she might be a new favorite author of mine!

My only criticism of the book is that I wish it was longer. Unfortunately, I just wanted more of it! Some parts felt a little underdeveloped, but it was masterfully done even for how short it was.

This is an intergenerational story of a family, of their trials and disconnections. Of teen pregnancy and of finding oneself. I enjoyed it heartily but with how shirt it was and so many stories interweaving back and forth I never felt like I fully got to know the characters.

Iris was the character I connected with and loved seeing Aubrey, but their daughter's parts that bookmarked the book I felt unmoored in following. We mostly saw her as a child and it felt strange that she was the one beginning and ending and we never fully saw thirties Iris' thoughts and inner world.

I really loved the story but if it had been more fleshed out and longer it would have become a favourite.
