A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 by W. Phillip Keller, who used to be a shepherd, was a good read that followed an easily comprehensible pattern; an explanation of the care the shepherd provides for his sheep during the various seasons, how this applies to how God cares for us and then how we can apply this new knowledge to our own lives. As we are also God's "sheep", Keller's comparison of how a good shepherd cares for his sheep and how God takes care of us is insightful. I gave this book a four vs. a five because there are times when Keller tells us how we "should feel". No one can tells us how we should feel, our feelings are our feelings. It's what we do with them that's important.
Other than that, I would recommend this book. I plan to read it annually.

Sheep and shepherds are a common theme in the Bible used to describe the state/relationship of man and God. I have always been fascinated by it. This book allows for someone who walked as a shepherd to give more insight into Psalm 23 from the perspective of a shepherd, and how it even more so points to Jesus being the Good Shepherd of His sheep (us). I recommend this to anyone wanting to understand the character of the Good Shepherd and the character of His sheep.

As Keller was a shepherd for many years, he expands the meaning of the 23rd Psalm and leaves one breathless! This is a book I'll read regularly,.

I appreciated the perspective of a shepherd breaking down this Psalm and it allowed me to more easily apply it to my life.

This book healed me .

I never knew so much about sheep and shepherds. After reading through this book, I have a much deeper understanding of sheep-ish parables and stories in the Bible.

What did David really mean when he compared God to a shepherd? This is a question W. Phillip Keller, former shepherd and pastor, seeks to answer.

Over the course of the book, his anecdotes from years of shepherding bring unexpected depth to Psalm 23. I didn’t realize how little I knew about sheep! I appreciated how he related his insights in multiple ways to each line of the poem, while also adding practical notes of how that should affect our daily lives.

Do goodness and mercy follow us in our day-to-day interactions?

Are we choosing to wander or wisely stay where we know we’ll be refreshed and renewed?

Are we overcome with worries or seeking peace with others and ourselves?

If you’ve meditated and memorized Psalm 23, I believe this devotional classic can shed new light on both the passage and on our understanding of Christ as the Good Shepherd. It deserves its impressively high rating of Goodreads, and is one I recommend adding to your bookshelf if you want to explore more of God’s nurturing character.

”For when all is said and done on the subject of a successful Christian walk, it can be summed up in one sentence: Live ever aware of God’s presence.”

Wow. I would recommend this quick read to anyone and everyone. Keller’s interesting insights to the life of sheep and a shepherd are fascinating and heart warming. To see myself as a sheep and Christ the shepherd has been transformative and impactful. Psalm 23 holds a new and dear place in my heart.
