This was a great collection! The characters were real and so were their predicaments. The writing was thought-provoking and literary. This is my first Amy Bloom but it won't be my last.

This started out really well. I loved the first story, I really liked the second story, I enjoyed the third story, and from there I would rather have had repeated root canals with hardly any pain management than keep reading. Good god, dull doesn't even touch it.

A serious case of don't fix what isn't broken I guess.

I had seen this book on the Goodreads giveaway page awhile back, and although I entered, I am so glad I did not win the giveaway. Thank goodness this is a library book I can take back!
The book was told in several small stories which I was not expecting. I was a bit thrown by the format because some chapters were related and there was a break in the book to let the reader know a new story was starting. However some chapters that followed were not a continuation of the preceding chapter so it threw me for a loop.
I have never read any of Amy Bloom's books, so I did not know what to expect. The style of writing was also hard for me to get into. I have to say that I skimmed the last 1/4 of the book, which I never do. Some parts kept me reading, and then later on, I was wondering when the story will end. I would not recommend this book.

I heard an interview with Amy Bloom on NPR and had to run out and read this book. Generally, I'm not a huge fan of short stories, but this was a quick and enjoyable read.

The omniscient narrator flitting from person to person is a bit odd, but I guess it's one way of presenting multiple simultaneous points of view. The book captures the importance of little moments by ignoring everything, both consequential and inconsequential, that happens between them. For a 200 page book, it's a bit of a cheat that 20 pages were previously published, but I suppose the later stories would have been incomprehensible without the original story.

Her writing is wonderful, but there's so much death in this one.
