Not sure why I wanted to read this, except that I came across some strong recommendation. Good to learn about, but difficult to fathom. What sticks is the prisoners' nonchalance about everything—whether they live or die, they don't really care, but they gladly leap at any chance for a few hours of slight diminution of cold or discomfort.

Good translation.

Spectacular, haunting, and Disturbing. Solzhenitsyn with the volume turned up to 11.

If you want to hear how people actually lived through the hell of Stalin's camps then read this book. Death from guards, inmates, criminals, starvation, cold etc are just the beginning. These stories make "A Day in the Life" seem like a cake walk. Shalamov actually makes one wonder if Solzhenitsyn wrote to protect the party more than tell the truth. If you are interested in Russia's near past and the Age of Stalin "Kolyma Tales " is a must.

A directness of style beyond the literary or the historical; the subject demands no less.
