This novel beautifully juxtaposes deception with redemption, and makes you question whether or not it's truly acceptable to lie in order correct the wrongs you've done in the past. The theme is similar to that of "The Kite Runner", but this main character chooses a redemption attempt over the course of a lifetime.

You'll have to decide for yourself if he is successful or if the end of the book is a suitable ending, but you'll be pleasantly drawn in with Hoffman's writing and haunting imagery. Worth the read.

I loved Alice Hoffman's Here on Earth and The Dovekeepers is one of my favorite books ever - however this was a good story with too much fluffy writing for me.

Blech, I think I am done with Alice Hoffman for a while. I find her hit-or-miss, and this one had all of the cheesy romance feel and none of the magic of the books of hers that I do like.

It's a story about forgiveness, yes, but it's not a story about forgiving, if you see the distinction. I just wish the book had some uplifting thread you could hold on to, rather than the monotonous dreary outlook of every single character at the worst point in their lives. It was just too dark for me. I don't mind darkness if there's a hint of a sunrise on the horizon at the end, but this book doesn't even allow you a rumor of the potential for a sunrise. The message seems to be that the darkness, once it sets in, is eternal.

Plus, the eponymous diary
Spoilerwas a huge disappointment
, and the constant switching of perspective from one character to another (sometimes another character in the same scene, sometimes no relation) made the entire act of reading a chore.

It wasn't bad, but I wouldn't recommend it.

I love Alice Hoffman. She has such a gift with words and can make you feel exactly what she wants you to.

The tone of this book is sad and beseeching from start to finish, and I loved it even though, or maybe because, it made me feel so weepy.

Didn't like how it was written, it seemed pretty unrealistic to me. And not the plot really, rather the characters and way they interacted.
