2nd read: still so good, comfortably creepy

1st read: one of the most intriguing books i’ve read this year. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. it’s unsettling in a way that chills you to the bone. absolutely a new favorite

Short read but very eerie. I’m not familiar with all the Japanese lores and myths, but there has to be something in that sort of nature that would explain the hallucinations and supernatural experiences main character Asa goes through. From what I can make of it is that all the sacrifices she makes as a wife drains the life out of her, leading her to see and hear things that are abnormal in the mundane and empty countryside. Her husband constantly on the phone in an absent manner, no one telling her anything about the mysterious shut in brother-in-law, grandpa also not quite responsive either. Her mother-in-law and herself become a mirrored image as both have to deal with the loneliness that is being a woman.

The main themes, after some consideration, made it worth the read. However, there were too many unanswered questions, loose ends, and characters/quirks that seemed like they were just in there too be surreal and not fit the themes. A mix of Lynch and Murakami.
