Ace book, Gemmell delivers. Baffles me a little bit that "Legend" was first released back in 1984 as I was expecting something along the lines of [b:The Eye of the World|228665|The Eye of the World (Wheel of Time, #1)|Robert Jordan|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1337818095s/228665.jpg|2008238], but what I got instead is a bastard with a distinct and extremely contemporary grimdark flavour to it.
Not a single dull page, peeps, not one.
That said, I really have no clue why I've waited so long to actually give this classic a chance.
Similar book? Hmm... I'd say Joe Abercrombie's [b:The Heroes|9300768|The Heroes (First Law World, #5)|Joe Abercrombie|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1375671200s/9300768.jpg|12879765].

A poetic tale of war and those caught at fates door. Legend by David Gemmell pulls readers into the lives of those who stand the front lines with no hope of winning. With emotional scenes between gritty battles, this was a captivating read.
Druss, a legendary soldier, is called back to battle in a hopeless war. The old veteran has several battles behind his name, but can he live up to his own legends?
This is a purposeful story, with quotable lines, great action, well crafted scenes and the more I read, the better it got. The story followed multiple points-of-view and shows different perspectives of the war, and its impacts. While Druss is a main character, he’s not the only one to stand out as a favourite or get great development.
There were several aspects I enjoyed; however, I found the beginning to be rushed. With events happening quickly to set up for the focus of the story during the war itself. Despite this, everything that follows was engaging and well executed.
From the themes of grief, the raw emotions of the characters, hope, and fear this had so many emotional and human moments between battles. Legend is one of those books I’ll be thinking on for some time.

This book was more of a 3.5 stars for me but I took into account that 1/ it was Gemmell's first book and 2/ it was published in 1984.
I loved Legend, it had me hooked from page one and I had a really hard time putting it down ! The story was fast-paced and fascinating. Almost every character was amazing and I felt deeply connected to their story. The writing style was great, it keeps you engaged and there's no lengthy descriptions.
I had a really hard-time with the romance, don't get me wrong I'm a sucker for a good romance but love at first sight is one of my bookish pet peeves and this was probably the worst instance of it I have ever read! It was just so dumb, unrealistic and way too convenient for plot-purposes.
I didn't really like the portrayal of women but, then again, tried my best to keep the publication year in mind ... So this is not really taken into account in my final rating.
The ending really let me down as well....
But the good outweighs the bad and I am gonna keep reading the Drenai Saga because I have a feeling it's gonna get better and better.
