The birth of naturalistic literary movement in Germany of 1889. The debut performance caused a scandal in the Kaiserreich. Naturalist fellow, the writer Arno Holz, called it the best drama ever written in German language. All figures are determined in their actions either through their social poverty, their ideologies,  alcohol abuse, sexual drives, and abusive family patterns. So, the suicidal end is inevitable, and leaves the only inncent, Helene, dead,  whereas all her culprits stay alive in their social and personal misery. A naturalistic, deeply pessimistic portrait of the rural Prussian society of Hauptmann's time.
