Excellent read. Horror, sci-fi, action and gore. This book has them all and plenty more. Easy fast read. Got a little maudlin at the end but i guess that's ok. Thanks Tressa!

This was a really good thriller...it reminded me of another one I'd read recently (where the doctor was "researching" enhancements and creating super-people by doing things in their brains), but only in the way of the villains - the rest of the story was completely different. It wasn't the type of book that I could guess what would happen next and definitely kept my interest all the way through. And I can not imagine the pain that the townspeople had to go through with these creeps. It's the type of story that makes you hope that things like this aren't really going on in the world.

When a helicopter crashes in the small town of Safe Haven, Wisconsin, the townspeople find themselves up against an enemy like nothing anyone has ever seen. Sheriff Arnold “Ace” Streng is a Vietnam vet and even he has never witnessed the brutality that his town will soon be facing. When he receives a call about the crash, Ace heads out to the site only to find his own cousin being tortured and the man’s wife butchered. The men behind this seem to want one thing and one thing only. They want to know where Warren is. It only takes Ace a minute to realize who they seek, but figuring out exactly why and how to rid his town of these enemies will take a bit longer. Jack Kilborn is a pseudonym for author JA Konrath, the man behind the Jack Daniels mystery series. This stand-alone thriller is a bit of a change of pace for Konrath, but is fast-paced and excellently plotted — extremely hard to put down.

Afraid is the first book I've read by Jack Kilborn. I wasn't disappointed whatsoever. Kilborn has a creepy way of writing though. I was surprised by the violence and the goriness of the plot, and well the novel in general.

Afraid is about a helicopter crashing in the small town of Safe Haven, Wisconsin. A force of horror, mercilessly attacks the small town. It's sole purpose is to isolate, terrorize and annihilate. The book starts straight into the gore and violence. It left me terrified. The fate of the town is left up to those who are strong enough to survive.

The characters were manipulated in a fashion I've never read about until this point. One character's sole purpose was to make a difference by helping others. Another character had serious baggage. As the book progressed you were left wondering who would survive. Also, you saw the beginnings of a relationship forming.

I really enjoyed this book, apart from the intense violence and gore. Hopefully in the future, I'd like to read more by Kilborn. He is an amazing author.

This is a very entertaining book about a small town of Safe Haven. The title is very appropriate because as you read the majority of the main characters are afraid throughout. The drama starts from the beginning and continues till the end. A good read.

Make sure to take your vitamins. Once this thing kicks off, it doesn't let up. Not for a moment. Satisfying, even if you're exhausted by the end. In the best of ways.

This book may not be for everyone. I almost didn't think it was for me but kept reading and glad I did. Ended up being a good book.
