Much of this was a soap opera. There did become a mystery element halfway through, and I was intrigued to see how that would play out. But for most of it it was kind of a sappy romance novel. The characterizations were strong, but of a variety of weak-willed characters!

It was, however, a very quick read. I read it in one afternoon!

maybe the book progresses for the better, but i had a hard time wrapping my head around this toxic relationship that definitely doesn't age well

I've always been a fan of E. Lynn Harris, devouring each book as soon as I could get my hands on them. Not so much this one. The story is average and predictable. Very disappointed!

It fulfilled my expectations and I was not disappointed. I did enjoy it because it was different from my usual reading. The book was different from others in the genre because it did not follow the usual romance formula. The plot pulled me in. The setting was not a character but it did come to life. I did not really feel like I was experiencing the time and place. The book could have been in a different place and it would not have mattered. A different time would have changed how the characters handled the situations. The book did not end how I expected. It did fit the genre. The scope is very small with few characters.

The author was the narrator. It was very fitting. I found the characters realistic. I would like to meet Jade and Sisqo. I liked AJ, Jade, and Sisqo. I disliked Mo and Judy, and Dre. The actions seem possible because I know people can be awful and people do many things for the ones they love. I would not have made the same decision as Dre, Judy, or Mo in the decisions they made. The characters are believable and develop fully.

Started this audiobook, and really not enjoying it. I can't stand the way AJ is fine with being a "kept" man, at beck and call. It's also coming across as very posh in this annoying way. AJ seems quite superficial, it's not steamy so far.
Bored and frustrated, probably done.

Well it was definitely interesting, but not exactly my cup of tea. This was my first time reading E. Lynn Harris, I knew nothing about his work and I honestly chose this book randomly because I liked the cover. So, I love romance, I love romance novels, and I love a HEA so pretty early on I realized that
I was not going to be seeing a HEA in this book, at least not between A.J. and Dray, as much as I might have wanted it, the situation just would not allow it, at least not in any realistic way
This is not a romance novel. Overall I have to say that the characters in general were just not very likable (barring the peripheral characters such as AJ's mom)I understand the author intended for the reader to hate some of the characters but even then they were way over the top and not very believable. I especially didn't like the main characters I'm not convinced that the two were ever truly in love. AJ was annoying to me, he constantly talked about how he had it so together, but he didn't really do anything for himself, he was in fact a kept man. He seemed like a braggart which was exactly what he talked down on others about. I liked Dray even less. I can not believe that he ever truly loved AJ. I understand that as a pro athlete it might not be good for your career to be out, but even so it seemed as though he was ashamed of AJ. He didn't respect him. What was unclear to me was Dray's relationship with his wife. I wanted to know how he felt about her. This was never addressed in the book, was she just supposed to be his cover or did he have serious feelings for her too. I think the author got around having to deal with this by having AJ "not want to know" about Dray's other relationships. Which for me was another strike against AJ. In truth the book was very much like a soap opera where no one really deserved a happy ending.

Some of the plot points were a bit predictable or illogical, but this book was very enjoyable to read. I felt a lot of emotions and I didn’t want to stop reading until I finished.

Minor Spoilers Ahead

I expected this story to be a romance, but it’s ultimately about the main character’s growth and progress. The ending was satisfying, mostly because it allows the reader to see the growth of the main character.

This was addicting and pretty problematic (fatphobic and misogynistic, to name two specifically). It ends how I wanted it to end, but it took a long ass time to get there. Maybe it's just me, but we spend so much time in AJ's head, but some of the best details aren't revealed til the end!! Was it supposed to be a series? I think Harris died in 2010 and this book is set in 2007, so idk if maybe he was planning on doing more for AJ.
Anyway, I always wanted to read E Lynn Harris and now I have! I think I'll check out some of his earlier work next time.
