Sorry—I want to embrace cheesy wholesome sci-fi and trumpet it to the world! But this one was so phenomenally dull—almost aggressively dull, like a social experiment to see if you can continue. 5 POV characters and no reason to continue with any of them. DNF 30%. As always, “better than I could write”, but not recommended.

Another excellent Wayfarers book! Becky Chambers is an absolute master of inspecting the mundane as a way of investigating the big picture. I love seeing the fleet through the eyes of insiders and outsiders alike. Even though the story starts with 5 seemingly disparate points of view, we slowly see them grow toward one another and interact with one another in the most profound moments of the book. The tech and lifestyle and culture of the exodus fleet are all beautifully well crafted and their scrappy utopia in the sky definitely has the solarpunk/hopepunk vibes I associate with Becky Chambers. The “utterly outsider” perspective of a non-human anthropologist takes it a step further and suddenly we’re not just examining these future humans on a giant space station, but we’re examining ourselves as well.

All in all I really enjoyed the varied perspectives, the flashes of familiar faces from other books, and the nuanced take on what it means to be truly From a place.

Not my fave. Dragged at times, but some of the characters really sucked me in. Once again, Becky Chambers makes me cry. Kip is my precious son.
