After the first book I had quite high hopes but unfortunately the author got lost too much in the feelings of the main character while neglecting the page of the story development , which got lost a bit.

The amount of time the protagonist spends wallowing in her guilt and her mistrust and feelings for her love interest become annoying. She also does not seem to learn from previous mistakes as she seems to insist to repeat them at the next opportunity.

The sex could have been dialled back as it was not needed for the story and felt out of place at times.

Overall, the  book could have easily been cut by 1/3 and it would have been faster paced  and the main story would have not been so disjointed and it would have been more enjoyable to follow.
I was also disappointed that the story about Andarna was left so vague, became important in the end but felt rushed.

One last thing I did not enjoy the voice actor who read the story for the audiobook version. She felt to have the need to convey the urgency in battle situations by reading louder and louder and faster and faster. It made it comical.

The ending sets us up for third book but I am not sure if I will even bother.

What a war! All the action and fighting and planning. I like how Yarros utilizes the dragons more in this book, especially Andarna (more frequent remarks that I found so funny and at the end). I don't see the romance as wanting to replicate the first book. I see it more as a romantic relationship that goes through tests of trusts. I do find it annoying and a bit controlling when Xaden expects Violet to ask him the correct questions in order for him to offer her the information she wants. And some of her remarks about Xaden became repetitive (though this may also be a me-thing, as I find too much mushy-gushy stuff in romance novels to be overbearing and annoying).

Whew, this book had me wishing I was on Tairn's back so I could've strapped myself in for the wildest ride that this story takes you on. The gang gang (Ridoc, Rhi, Sawyer, and Vi) continue to enlighten the book with cute found family moments, lighthearted jokes to poke fun at one another, and be the comic relief scenes between holding my breath and gasping audibly when something crazy happens in the chapters inbetween. I found the writing to be repetitive still at times (Violet saying "Noted", breathing through her nose and out through her mouth, Tairn flying the fastest ever, that Xaden eclipsed/took up space/ was the sun or gravity in the room, and almost tripping over her feet over shocking news got old quick after 300 pages), and I didn't fully understand Xaden and Violet's relationship this go-around, almost had me shipping Violet and Dain more at times. Still one of the more thrilling and adventurous books I've read, and Rebecca does not disappoint. Can't wait for the third!

Super disappointed. Absolutely no more plot, it's messy, immature and focuses too much on the romantic interest for me. The random sex scene pull me out of the story (I skip them) and the pace is super slow for very little actual plot happening. I couldn't push myself to finish it; it was a significant downfall from the first book.

I liked this book a tad less than the first and once again took me a bit to get into the flow of. I have to say my love of the main characters really took a dive in this book. I specifically took a huge issue with Xaden and the dynamic of not disclosing things to Violet unless she asked. In some cases, like
his second signet
, I could understand because
it’s literally life or death
. It was hard for me to come back from
him never being fully truthful about Cat
. I had a lot of ups and downs with this book. Overall I felt like this book lacked the same punch as the first one did, but damn does Rebecca Yarros know how to hit us with a good cliffhanger.
