This is a book I will be chewing over for awhile. We love a good morally gray book full of morally gray characters. This book has been described as a tense psychological thriller and I agree with the first two-thirds, but it’s more like a slow-motion tragedy than a thriller. We spend two weeks in the village where our protagonist has been summoned to stand watch over a girl who supposedly has been surviving four months with no food, but begins to collapse before the reader’s eyes. As the story and motivations of not just this little girl but the people around her begins to unravel, the impending heartbreak makes this a starkly agonizing read. But the ending was deeply unexpected for me, and while maybe a little rushed, also very thoughtful and surprisingly sweet. This book is about belief, in the end: what we choose to believe and why we choose to believe it, and how we can always choose to change. I think that message found me at a good moment, and I’m glad I happened to pick up this read!
