DNF @37%. Disappointed. This was not as good, or as thrilling as, the first story.

If you've been looking for a contemporary mystery/thriller set in the world of the 1990's Nordic death metal scene, set in Iceland featuring a middle-aged alcoholic protagonist, this book is for you! Solid, but semi-disturbing read.

I can’t believe I’ve never heard of this author before this month. These books are well-written, chewy, crime novels. More!

Boy this series is gritty. Not for the faint hearted. But a really good fast paced mystery, I do like the protagonist, even though she's SUCH a mess!! I read this one in a day, just can't stop turning these pages. And I hear this series only gets better, so #3, here I come!

The 2nd Cass Neary book is a thriller and avoids skirting the boundary of the fantasic even more than the first. The Cass Neary character is wearying but I love Hand's abaility to lyrically intersect the worlds of worlds of death-obsessed photography and black metal music weaving throughout them Nordic history, myth and ritual.

These books are great. Very dark and atmospheric. Cass is not a particularly sympathetic protagonist, she's usually kind of stumbling around, often on drugs, but she's an excellent observer. The books are short, too, and often kind of unresolved. The prose is excellent though. I'm looking forward to reading the next one.
