Mary Shelley really is that girl!
I went through a variety of emotions while reading this from fear of contemplation of life and death to melancholy for our monster’s loneliness. While I don’t love Victor’s abandonment, I do love the monster’s willingness to learn from his environment and become a well-read scholar. Nature versus nuture, baby!
The nuance in Victor is well-done; we start on his side, invested in his interest in medicine and science but as the monster relays his experience post-birth, our feelings towards our seeming protagonist starts to waver. By the end, it’s clear that Victor cannot look outside himself and his feelings of revenge, lacking empathy for his creation. Justice for our monster :( he just wanted love and a friend!!
