3 stars. This book was somewhat slow but interesting, until about 70% of the way through. At that point, it makes a big left turn into what feels like another book, and I have no clue why. It was quite jarring and everything after that felt either like it didn't belong or like it was struggling to finish what had become a bizarre mashup of ideas that didn't really gel. It did manage to lumber to a somewhat reasonable ending, but the flow was gone by then.
