"to be understood,
to be more than pure light
that burns
where no one is—"
---
"Every morning I walk like this around
the pond, thinking: if the doors of my heart
ever close, I am as good as dead."
---
"All else is peripheral,
remote, unfelt. The connections have broken."
---
"each of them, though it stands
in a crowd of many,
like a separate universe,
is lonely, the long work
of turning their lives
into a celebration
is not easy."

"Sometimes what’s wrong does not hurt at all, but rather
shines like a new moon."

This summed up the poignant feeling I had of reading dream work. I had been sleeping on Mary Oliver for a long time. Everybody kept telling me this one is a real deal. Wish I had read it during my previous years.

I read Devotions prior to this, so I was initially expecting something very pleasant and occasionally provoking but nothing super cutting. What I got was actually a much more varied and angry and stark collection than I had expected. The various modes this book adopts fill out her visionary and poetic scope in such surprising ways to me—even as her poetry remains very readable and digestible—and I am so glad I finally got to read an actual collection from her.

Mary Oliver had such a firm grasp the human experience. Everything of hers resonates so deeply, sometimes even in places I wasn’t aware existed within me.

If you've seen wild geese doing the rounds on social media and you love it, I can pretty much guarantee you'll love this entire book. Hopeful, heartfelt and incredibly beautiful. A fast and easy new favourite. Very much comfort poetry, in my opinion.
