A new take on the fairy tales. Couldn't put the book down and ready to see what happens next.

This book was OK. The idea behind it all was a very good and interesting idea, if executed properly this book could have been amazing. That beginning said I just feel that the execution was poor and needed a bit of work. There was times when I did enjoy it, I feel as if more time needed to be spent on grammar, and the all around execution. Nothing was connected. One min the setting was a school dance in the auditorium the next the back of a van. With no indication what so ever that the setting was changing. I'm not sure if i'm gonna continue with this series, guess well wait and see.

I'm so sad about this book. So sad. I mean, it had so much potential going into it. But there are some YA novels that are not really made for young adults. This book didn't make sense half of the time, and the other half of the time it was just uninteresting. The main character wasn't really believable - she's clumsy, but only sometimes. She's gorgeous, but only sometimes. I mean, figure out how to make your protagonist a real person that I can relate to on some level. Or, make me hate her a lot. Otherwise, I just couldn't get into it. I feel bad about not liking this book so much, because I was so excited for it, but my gold standard for fairy tale adaptations is Ella Enchanted, and this was just no where near that level. Granted, I do kind of want to read more just to feel like the story is complete, and to figure out who the mysterious helper man really is, but otherwise, I'm sad that I spent money on this book.

Mina, main character of UnEnchanted, finds out the reason that her family keeps moving from state to state. She is told of her family's Grimm curse and the fact that her father died from trying to beat it. The shock hits her hard but instead continue to run away, she decides that she must stand up and beat the curse in order to protect her little brother, who would have to face it if she died.

Her courage to take on the curse head on was inspiring but really out of character. Her shy appearance that the beginning of the book seems to disappear and all of a sudden she transforms to this valiant warrior who is ready to take on any task at hand. I must say that I was not expecting the instant change and was thoroughly confused by it.

This book had so much potential. I loved the plot and where the story was heading, but the writing was very…..unique. I did not mind the fact that there were some grammar mistakes throughout the book, but what irks me is that the author spelled the main character’s name wrong! It could have been a simple typo but before publishing the book, she should have edited it, because trust me; it needed it!

I only gave 3 stars to the book because I felt that the characters could have been better portrayed. The characters in this story seem really bipolar and most of the time I am confused on what is happening because of their constant mood swings, especially Mina's. Mina goes from desperately begging for help from a stranger that she suddenly feels she can “trust” to downright angry to the same stranger. When reading the story, sometimes I just feel that the characters need to sit down and take a chillpill!

Overall, the book did peak my interest and I encourage everyone to try it out because of the interesting plot that is told, I know I will be reading the second book just to find out how the tale continues. If you don't mind the occasional grammar error, then you might find yourself cozying up in a chair and reading this story in one read!

Good story, faulty grammar

First, I want to say that this book did grip me. I think that the story was very well-thought-out and kept my interest until the very end. The grammar, however, was appalling to the point that it became distracting at times. Split infinitives were especially taxing. I mean, how hard is it to say "not to" instead of "to not"? It even sounds better and flows more easily off the tongue. There were also quite a few typos. The editing of this book left a lot to be desired.

There was one more thing with which I took issue. Mina and Nana are in a pet store, about halfway through the book, when Mina realizes that "amphibians . . . began to hop, climb, and otherwise maneuver to the top of the tank so they could escape through the lid." Then later snakes are mentioned as escaping as well, as if snakes are amphibians. They are not; they are reptiles. Maybe it's the fact that I'm the daughter of a biochemist, the wife of a biologist, and the mother of a future scientist, but that irked me. Maybe the author didn't mean to lump the snakes in with the amphibians, but that's how I took it.

So, like I said, the story definitely kept my interest; maybe the artist just needs to focus on the editing side as well. Of course, I guess the same could be said of a lot of the inexpensive or free Kindle reads. In this, as in everything, you get what you pay for.

I am a huge fan of fairytales and also the Brothers Grimm, it didn't take long for me to fall into the story and become absorbed. Mina, our clumsy outcast of a heroine quickly learns she is a descendant of the Brothers Grimm and gains the family curse. She has to fight her way through tales as they seek her out. The end was a bit predictable and was a fairly short read. I didn't pay anything as it was free but I didn't feel like I wasted my time either. I even look forward to putting Fairest on my tbr list.

Have I Read The Book Before Listening to the Audio?
Yes

Overall Audio Impression:

For the record, I have reread this series a few times and this is my first time listening to the audiobook. I really enjoyed listening to this reader and getting to read the story again. I don’t think the voices for the characters were done completely different from each other, but certain characters (main ones) did have a specific tone to them that made it a bit easier to pick them out without verbal character tags. I did forget how angsty/concerned Mina gets about Brody’s attention/interest in her, but for me I didn’t think it was too bad. I was mostly focused on Mina’s journey to learning how to cope with the Grimm curse and high school at the same time.

This was a freebie from Amazon that I managed to get round to over the Christmas holidays at my parents's house. I couldn't remember the blurb so I pretty much went in without knowing much about the story, which was great as everything was a surprise. I felt as if I were learning things when Mina was.

Mina is likeable because of her shyness. I think most women or girls reading this story would be able to relate to her when it comes to her speaking to Brody, her crush. I know I've been there, many times. nan, her best friend, is also a great and likeable character. Let's face it, we all knew a Nan and wished we could be her.

The pace of the story is great as Hahn mixes up the history of Mina's family and working it into the present day story. As a reader, I never felt rushed or struggled to keep up with the information provided. Hahn was able to weave everything up nicely. Even the addition of new characters, such as Jared, was seamless and enhanced the flow of the story.

I first though that the story was a modern retelling of a fairy tale, which isn't something I usually enjoy, but it's not that at all. Its a new take on the history of the borthers Grimm and their tales which was very well thought out and executed. I will definitely read more in this series once I can afford to buy the books as I want to know more about Mina (and Jared!)
