As with all collections, I enjoyed some of these stories more than others, but overall it’s a particularly strong group! There was a recurring theme of something-isn’t-quite-right-here, whether it’s a man who illegally fishes in a lake that’s been overrun with butterflies (“Monona” by Raven Leilani), a little boy in a photo who has maybe disappeared up a tree (“The Pitch” by Laura van den Berg), a lover who experiences violence outside a grocery store in a new town (“A Brief History of Grocery Stores” by T. Kira Madden), sports fields absurdly crowded with cloned athletes (Pelle Cass’s “Crowded Fields” photo collection), or a medical facility for people whose bones dissolve at night (“The Bone Ward” by Kate Folk). Incidentally, many of these pieces were among my favorites. I’m especially looking forward to checking out Kate Folk’s own story collection, Out There, which contains “The Bone Ward” and, I’m hoping, more tales of a similarly uncanny nature.

Rating not a reflection of quality, just of my own enjoyment. Liked a handful of stories, was ambivalent to most.
