I didn’t expect to be so completely engrossed in the lives of these four girls. I enjoyed learning about Korean culture and society and the pressures put on women (and men), while deeply relating to these girls and their experience navigating young adulthood. The author elegantly weaves together 4 lives, which could have come off as predictable or trite but I found poetic. The topics in this book are heavy, the frustration at the futility of life is real, but there is enough hope and joy and friendship to make this a great read.

It has a great commentary on beauty standards and gender politics for women in South Korea.

The story is so short but it's like buying an assortment of donuts in one donut box. You get to enjoy all of them even if you wanted more. I am also very fond of the theme that it's women looking out for other women in this world. We have each other's faces, etc.

some parts of this book i absolutely loved and other parts i wasn’t so keen on. it felt both too long and too short, and the ending felt so sudden and vague to me.

however, i will say it was an interesting read and the characters, flawed as they were, were entertaining and i found myself somehow rooting for all of these women.

Literary and contemporary are two genres I don't often enjoy, but I very much enjoyed this book. Not so much that it was entertaining, but more like it was a door showing me modern South Korea and the concerns of women there. Each of the four protagonists had her own worries, her own dreams, her own history, and her own way of coping with the challenges of South Korean life, from the brutal economy to the female beauty obsession to the tension between personal desires and traditional values. It's dark and it's sad and it doesn't wrap up neatly - real life never does, either - but it's engrossing and emotional and ultimately finds hope in the power of female friendships.

The ending was a bit abrupt but maybe I thought that because I wished the book to go on forever! I loved!! the characters and would read other books by Frances Cha, most definitely. Highly recommend if you want a glimpse into life in Korea from the eyes of many different women.
