Very sweet and well written, but a little far fetched as a premiss. I also felt while it was necessary for her to be tentative after being abused at the start of the book, it seemed to go on for a little too long.
Overall enjoyable.

This was super cute! I was a little dissatisfied with the ending, but, idk. I still had a good time! A unique little story. That’s all I can say about it. It’s probably a 3.5 for me, but a high 3.5.

Overall I liked this story but I didn't love it. Going into it I knew I would have to reconcile some of the word choices with the knowledge of when it was written. And it was still difficult to read sometimes. I loved seeing Annie's world open up after her marriage to Alex. When he realized she was Deaf, Alex was determined to do everything he could to help her learn to interact with those around her and I enjoyed watching that happen. I'm glad I finally read this as it had been on my radar for awhile; there was a sweetness to it that just made me smile.

Audio (Ann Marie Lee)

Summary:  After his brother rapes a young disabled woman, Alex takes the events deeply to heart, and agrees to marry her and raise her child.  As they spend more time together, he finds that she may have been underestimated by her parents and sets out to help her escape the boundaries her parents set on her life.

Stats: HR, M/F, open door, stand alone.

Notes: I enjoyed the angst and over the top-ness to this story, but I did struggle with some of the ways that Annie was described - frequently as childlike, etc.  It makes sense in the context, but it’s hard to get behind some of the MMC’s thoughts/plans given the medical and emotional (as well as physical) abuse she has survived - once the plot gets underway, this became less uncomfortable, but I wonder if it might have been helped or hindered more by more insight into Annie’s POV.  I also found it difficult to reconcile the way her parents’ abuse was handled, but life isn’t always just, so that wasn’t a dealbreaker for me either.  The narration was fine, but it was sometimes hard to tell if Annie’s “voice” was actual dialogue or thoughts, especially as the story progressed.

OTT and Spoilery Content Notes:
Deaf/ mute FMC, Alcohol, mistreatment of a horse, mentions of religion, homophobia (from villain), bullying/harassment of FMC, ableism (against FMC), domestic abuse of/domestic violence towards FMC (from parents), childhood illness, SA of FMC/rape of FMC (not by MMC, on page, rape stated not heavily described), knife violence, general manhandling, death of parent, MMC strangles someone briefly, violence (fist-fighting), mention of hanging/execution, trauma response, tobacco, victim blaming of FMC (not by MC), pregnancy, infantilization of FMC, infertility (MMC), discussion of abortion (negative), medical care without informed consent, concern about weight and dieting, concern about hereditary illness, lots of “crazy” talk, kinship care, discussion of institutionalization, marriage of convenience, MMC physically restrains FMC to keep her from running away, FMC assaulted/abused/restrained by a caregiver, medical abuse of FMC, gift giving, mention of accidental deaths of kittens, blood, Labour/delivery of a horse (with complications), mmc throws something in anger, nipple play, fistfight, guilt, some pregnancy related body dysmorphia/negative body image, food play, labour and delivery/childbirth (uncomplicated), mmc has paid for sex, infant, breastfeeding, long distance relationship, age gap (FMC 19-20, MMC around 30? or slightly over), 1890
