Sitting here, weeping over a graphic novel. #averagethursday
Andrea is buried. Carl and Rick take it super hard. Rick starts sleeping on her grave. Carl leaves for the Hilltop. Rick agrees, saying that Carl has to live his own life.
Neegan has been released, banished from the settlements, and forced to live on his own. Maggie is extremely unhappy about this. She wants Neegan dead for what he's done to everyone, including Glenn.
Saddiq tells Rick about Eugene's radio and Rick speaks with Stephanie. Stephanie, at first, refuses to speak to anyone except Eugene, but Rick convinces her to meet. They can meet on ground her group chooses, not close enough to find her, but close enough for them to get to. Stephanie agrees. Rick tries to get Jesus and Dwight to go, but Jesus refuses. He's with Aaron and wants to retire from that life. Dwight, furious with Rick, also refuses. He feels, between the death of Sherry and the fact that Neegan stepped in to solve the tension at the end of the last volume, Rick is no longer qualified to lead. Later, Laura tries to comfort Dwight, who is so anti-Rick, he's just not buying it. Later, Laura, sick of Dwight's complaints, tells him to fuck off.
Michonne volunteers to go on this mission, instead. Eugene, Siddiq, Magna, and Yumiko go with her. (Magna and Yumiko are a secret-not-so-secret couple.) They travel for a while together, eventually passing through Pittsburgh (yay!). They spend a hauntingly peaceful night in a seemingly empty city. Siddiq, racked with guilt that Eugene has done so much and saved Siddiq's life, confesses to Eugene that Rosita was going to leave him for Siddiq. Eugene ... seems to move past it.
As they leave, Michonne turns and shouts into the city to see if any dead respond. Instead, Juanita "Princess" Sanchez answers. She saves the group from a pack and asks to travel with them. She has a trollish sense of humor, simultaneously infuriating and amusing the group. She seems solid. They fight and travel their way to the meet-up point, but there is no one there. At all. They are suddenly and unexpectedly ambushed and we see no more of them for this volume.
Maggie asks Dante to track Neegan. Neegan walks until he comes upon the spot that he buried Lucille (the bat). Dante reports back to Maggie Neega's location.
We see time pass. The Hilltop gets rebuild. Rick helps replant food. People struggle. Rick eventually stops sleeping on Andrea's grave.
Carl and Lydia grow closer. Freckle-Girl grows a little jealous and confesses this to Carl. It's unclear if she's jealous of the romantic feelings that might be developing or jealous over the lost friendship. Or both. Later, while Lydia and Carl have lunch, Freckles drops a stack of something and Carl goes over to help her clean it up. Lydia seems upset.
Soon, Jesus and Aaron leave for the Hilltop. While camping, they are attacked by Beta. Jesus is ... amazing and they save each other. Beta is defeated and unmasked. Aaron and Jesus recognize him as a pre-epidemic basketball player. They make their way to another Whisperer's camp. A family is regretting their decision to join the Whisperers and, as they try to back away, the Whisperers come at them. Aaron and Jesus take the entire camp down and direct the family to one of their settlements.
Cut to Neegan: he brings flowers to Lucille's grave, speaking to the bat like it's his dead wife. He talks about his life. He struggles. He survives. Eventually, he finds another baseball bat, which sends him into a TOTALLY RELEVANT AND NON-TRANSFERENCE BREAKDOWN! He loves his old bat! He doesn't need a new one! This bat isn't his wife! Eventually, he takes the bat and wraps it in barbed wire. As he sits, cooing at it, Maggie appears with a gun. She means to kill him for what he's done and Neegan confesses that it has haunted him. As Maggie's resolve falters, he begs her to kill him. Maggie decides not to - he doesn't deserve such relief - and leaves him to deal with his memory. She kisses Dante and they leave. Neegan burns his bat.

This volume has a few storylines like Maggie rebuilding, Carl and Sophia being friends again, Negan’s exile. They were all good. It was slow and we saw some of the Whisperers again but nothing too stressful. It was fine.

Damn. This is the first volume in a looooooong time that I really ENJOYED. Negan... man. THAT was interesting.

Meh. Another set of filler comics until the next big (human) baddie comes along. I'm fine with your baddie of the month but these filler comics need more than just character development that honestly we just don't need. Unless it's honestly introducing a new batch of characters that will eventually push out what's left of the original roster, I really don't think there's much to explore in terms of character. Half the characters have progressively become very annoying to read about and those that have been likeable for one reason or another is starting to become huge disappointments (I.e. Negan).
Just like the show, this comic series just needs to end before it becomes lame under it's own weight and limps onward to an end.

It was good. I like the new character present in this comic, she is very funny. The graphic novel itself was dragging in the beginning, but the end was very amazing. I can't wait to read more.

The facts that (a) Princess is the coolest, and (b) Negan does some gardening saved this from being a 3-star (or lower) collection. Nothing happens! Let's get it together, guys.
