I think I need to stop trying to read classic Russian literature. They all write like some kind of condescending professor or father that’s trying to get you to understand something but will only give you little “hints” so you can reach conclusions yourself, but you never actually say exactly what they want to hear so they just keep amusedly going while you continue to get increasingly frustrated.

DNF at page 148 out of 373. I first tried reading this from the V&P translation a few years ago and also DNF'ed it. I did a lot of research on this novel before trying it again in another translation this time (Burgin and O'Connor), but I still am not connecting with it. It is a chore to read; I have really had to force myself to pick this up. I understand it is a satire and critique on Stalin's regime. I understand the meta parts of how Bulgakov incorporates personal experiences into this novel. I've been annotating for themes. And after all that prep-work, I unfortunately still do not find it compelling. Will I try it again for the 3rd time one day? I don't count on it... Frankly, this read to me as a bad knock off of Kafka.

Mi è piaciuto molto questo libro! Un caposaldo della letteratura russa ma non il solito mattone che ci aspettiamo!
Indubbiamente il tempo che ci ho messo a finirlo non è stato poco e, soprattutto nella prima parte, non è stato facile tenere il passo perché è molto caotico!
Nella seconda parte invece sono riuscita a mantenere più alta la concentrazione e a divorarlo in pochi giorni.
Mi ha fatto sorridere in diversi punti ed ho adorato i personaggi!
Naturalmente i nomi russi non sono facili da ricordare e spesso sono dovuta ritornare indietro per capire chi fosse il protagonista delle marachelle di Behemont e Korovev, ma Google mi ha aiutato!
Il romanzo è diviso tra la Mosca contemporanea e il Jerusalemme dei tempi di Pilato, ma che non mi è molto piaciuta, ho preferito la parte di Woland e dei suoi seguaci, ma comunque mi rendo conto che sia necessaria alla narrazione.
Lo rileggerei volentieri di nuovo! Assolutamente!
