That was a very good summary of the earliest period of our written history. I loved how the text was interspersed with translations of poems and texts from that era.

Babylon contains a mix of wonderful history and confused attempts at interpretation. From the beginnings of mechanical thinking at Eridu through the ever more heavily constructed empires which took over Mesopotamia, the book nicely demonstrates the gradual molding of society into "civilization." However, it ends up making many simplifications and generalizations about the effects of Mesopotamian society on the world as a whole, especially regarding the ideas of progress, tradition, and religion.
