Chasing River

K.A. Tucker

4.02 AVERAGE

I'm normally not usually a fan of rom suspense books, but this Burying Water series is the exception. I completely fell for River and I wish I could hear him, instead of reading his words. Anything that happens in Dublin intrigues me, so this book was a little bit perfect for me.

Another winner for KA!!! Full review to come closer to release day.

****EDIT****
Let me start off by saying that normally I’m not one for suspense books. They makes my nerves shot and my stomach all twisty. But this Burying Water series by K.A.Tucker is one of the exceptions. This series has characters that draw you in. While some may not be the “perfect” characters(I mean, let’s face it, no one’s perfect) but you’ll find yourself rooting for them and hoping they find the right path. River is one of those characters.

I liked River. I mean, let’s face it, he’s Irish. What’s not to like? He risks his life for someone, when most people would’ve just ran away. He works hard to keep his family’s pub running smooth, while trying to keep his trouble maker brother out of harm’s way. So when this American girl shows up and shows interest in him, he really should try and push her away. He’s not good enough for her.

Amber Welles has wanted this trip for years. She even made a crazy vacation bucket list, with her brother’s girlfriend, Alex.

#1 Have a torrid affair with a foreigner.

Sounds easy enough. Everyone does that. Well, when you’ve just been saved by a ridiculous hot Irishman, an affair sounds like a good idea. YOLO, and all that. What she doesn’t know is that her savior, isn’t all she thinks he is. He has secrets that could change this course she’s on, if she’s not careful.

Their love affair was not without lots and lots of bumps in the road. His past isn’t all sunshine and roses, and getting mixed up with the Sheriff’s daughter, who always does the right thing, may not be in his best interest. But maybe, just maybe, being chased is the best thing for him.

I actually found myself really liking all the side characters, in this one. The Delaney family, with the exception of the oldest brother, was fun to read. I could hear Rowen’s teasing tone, right through the pages. But my favorite was Ivy. She may seem tough on the outside, but that girl has a sweet side that I’m sure will come out in the next book. I just know her book is going to be great!!

Hovers somewhere between 3.5-4*

This wasn't my favourite K.A. Tucker novel but I still enjoyed it.

Her ability to write interesting, funny and realistic dialogue is something that always stands out to me. It's something that can pull me through sections that can seem a bit heavy or bogged down.

I generally don't love stories that have a lot of gang related stuff so that's where my interest kind of died while reading. I also haven't read the first two books in the series so I'm sure that would have helped me understand some of the secondary characters a bit more! But if I'm being honest I was only drawn to this book because of the travel/Irish element. I don't feel an urge to read the other ones... Yet anyway!

I just want to shout out how much I LOVED THIS BOOK. Seriously.

I have to admit I haven't read the previous books of the series, BUT this book can totally be read as a standalone. It was perfect, it was swoon-worthy, it was completely intriguing. I couldn't stop reading, but then again... why would I?

Chasing River is the third book of the Burying Water series by K.A. Tucker. In this book, we meet Amber Welles, a 25 year-old young woman who's decided to take a trip around Europe for a while. She's always been this organized girl. She knows what she wants and she's probably gotten everything so far... But still, there's something missing. So after her boyfriend dumps her with the lame excuse of "you're too young", there's really nothing else, besides her family, tying her to her to her small town in Oregon. She needs a distraction, something different, something to take her mind off of things. Something that makes her feel alive. And nothing says "YOU'RE ALIVE" as a near-death experience. After that day, Amber's life completely changes. The trip that started as something fun and enlightening, transforms itself into something she wasn't expecting. At all.

This is a story of being in the right place, at the right time. It's all about the decisions we make and how they will impact your life and the lives of the people around you.

I couldn't have loved it more.

This book is told from two POVs, Amber's and River's. First, we have Amber, she's a strong girl, raised by an amazing surgeon as a mom and the town sheriff as a dad. She's always been the good girl, having no choice in the matter since her brother has always found himself in some kind of trouble. She's the popular girl, with the nice boyfriends, and always surrounded by the "right crowd". After finishingor college, she decided to go back to her hometown and be a nurse there. That's what she knows, what she's always known and will always be certain of. There's nothing new to it, so she's comfortable. It's her comfort zone. She has a nice life, but she knows there's more to it and, for a while, there's been this nagging curiosity about wanting to see what's out there. There's always a time for everything, I believe, so when she decided to embark on this journey through different countries, cultures and histories, she had the opportunity to open her mind to new things, new people, new feelings. She couldn't have planned for anything that happened. She was completely relatable to me. Sometimes we are so scared of changes, we end up just settling with what we have and the hand we were dealt with. And sometimes, we forget there's an entire world out there, that's just waiting for us to do something with it. That's what Amber did. I loved that she gave herself the chance to go open her mind and realize that life is not black and white, that there's this huge grey area that may give us the answer to many of our questions. We need to give ourselves the chance to live some adventures in life, and she set the example pretty well.

"It can't be anything else." And yet my heart is telling me it's everything else.

K.A Tucker did an amazing job with Amber. The way she describes what she's thinking and feeling makes it so much easier to relate to her. She's real, or at least she felt real to me, and that's what I'm always looking for in a character.

Then we have River. Riiiiiiiver. Well, I fell completely in love with him from the first page. The guy is just so dreamy and interesting and gorgeous. He has written hero all over him, even though he doesn't believe he has anything worth keeping. He's the kind of guy who's truly good, with the best intentions, the best manners. But he also has this explosive side of him, and no, I don't mean it like is violent or anything, he just can't stand seeing someone who's been wronged just because. His heart is pure and I just loved every single bit of him. He was the perfect guy for that "torrid affair with a foreigner", only he's not just that. He becomes something more special than that after just a few pages. He's a charmer, but he's honest, and hard-working. I loved reading his POV because it gave some kind of desperate perspective. I felt his frustration towards his brother. I felt his love and passion about Amber. I felt his forever loyalty to his family. It was perfect.

"I want you to look at me the way you used to. I want you to think that I'm good. I want you to still want me. Do you?"

The rest of the characters... they all play a big part of the story. River's family is a little bit complicated and you can't begin to imagine how much, but they all have this amazing routine that makes them adorable in their own way. Well, all except one, of course. I'm really intrigued with them actually. I can't wait to read the rest of the books and find out what's their story, especially Alex's.

K.A Tucker's books always have something, I don't know what, that make the story just so beautiful. I've loved every book I've read by her. They all have the right amount of everything, from the emotions you're going to feel (because trust me, you are), to the drama, and suspense. I guess it's the sum of amazingly developed characters, a perfect way to describe the situations and feelings each character is experiencing, and the secrets that keep revealing as the story grows.

This was different to any KA Tucker book I've previously read but I'm a loyal fan and I liked the different tone.

Amber is an American tourist in her 20s on a four month 'see all you can of the world' trip. She landed in Ireland the day before and was busy hurtling to her tour of the city pick up. She is jumped on by a local man when the world literally explodes.

River saved Amber from his brother's wrong doings and now he's suffering literally. Neither Amber or River can forget about their brief meeting. These two are an unlikely coupling, from completely different sides of the tracks. This book was suspense filled and drew me in. There were aspects of the IRA that didn't gel for me but I have personal feelings about it having been involved in the Manchester bombing aftermath.

I was provided with a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Chasing River revolves around Jesse's sister Amber Welles who goes on a trip to Ireland and accidentally gets caught up in in some IRA madness because of River and his brother Aengus. Oh and she falls for the charming River along the way (of course!)
I wanted to like this book more than I actually did. I liked that it was set in Ireland, I liked the Irish characters (River, Rowen) and also Ivy (the tattoo artist from book 1). But Amber is possibly the most boring, dull character ever. The chemistry with River is just not there in my opinion and she has no intelligent or interesting thoughts at all. It's a shame because Ivy is way more fascinating imo and I'd much rather have read about her relationship with Rowen to be honest. I give the book 3* because it's set in Ireland which makes a nice change, i liked that element. It also didn't focus *too* much on the criminal activity side of things (which I thought was one of Becoming Rain's downsides).
But just to sum this book up, I would say it's worth a read if you have read the others in the series - they all follow a similar pattern and I quite enjoy them even though they all have faults.
But it would have be 10x better if the author actually developed the female protagonist into someone we could actually root for.

I’m not gonna lie, I am pretty disappointed with this book. It is, so far, my least favorite K.A. Tucker book. I did enjoy it, but I was not sold on the romance or the story as I usually am. I could not stand Amber. I don’t know what it was about her, but she rubbed me the wrong way. And it’s not that she’s not nice or anything. She’s actually really sweet; she’s pretty close-minded, but she’s grown to believe that not everything is black and white. That the world, and people, are not always what they seem. However, there were many things said in her inner dialogue that rubbed me the wrong way, and I ended up being indifferent toward her. But I LOVED River! Oh my gosh, he was such a fascinating character. He had personality, he had a background, he had a lot more characterization. He was just so darn adorable. And I loved his relationships with his family members, especially his little brother, Rowen (except for when he made a rape joke WHICH WAS NOT COOL OR FUNNY AND I REALLY DISLIKE HIM FOR THAT). I also loved the addition of Ivy; she’s such a cool person, and I cannot wait for her book! The romance was… okay. I didn’t have strong opinions on it, probably because of how much I didn’t care for Amber. And it was kind of sacrificed for the real problems happening in Ireland. I’m glad all of this was in the book, because I learned something new and it made the story-line different and unique. But it overpowered the characters’ development (except on River’s side), and the romance. I mean, I liked Chasing River, but it’s definitely not my favorite in this series.

This was a really enjoyable read.
I think the fact that I gave up sleep for this book affirms how enjoyable it was. Like almost every book there are points where you're like "hmmm I don't know about that," and this one wasn't excluded. Besides those moments I actually had lots of fun with River and Amber.
What I loved most about this book was that KA Tucker included the fact that Amber might like River simply because of the fact that he saved her. My dad once told me, "If you help someone in/with their life, they're bound to have some feelings for you," and I like how that was portrayed in this book. Because it is true, believe me. That with a mix of attraction and a sense of loyalty was what made this story.
River, oh how I loved River, at times. There are moments where you become so frustrated with him because of his loyalty. Yes, it is admirable, but when someone has burned you over multiple times, it's a sign to cut ties. KA Tucker depicts that struggle so well that I have to give her a round of applause.
Amber was admirable. She's a stickler to the rules and her struggle to be someone different for at least a little bit was very apparent. There was a scene in the book where Amber finds out a few things about her family, and what I loved most about it was that it goes to show that even at an age where one should know everything there is to know about their family there are still skeletons in the closet. When she finds out a few of those secrets and other secrets about River her reaction is pretty much how everyone would react but she took her time and actually she thought about it.

The writing in Chasing River was believable. The characters had depth, the setting was beautiful, and the history that was acknowledged was meritorious. It's not often that I see concise research in a book and again for that ALL THE APPLAUSE to KA Tucker.

P.S. THAT BEDTIME STORY GOT ME SO HARD IN THE FEELS. Gah lee man I was an ocean of tears at 4 o'clock in the dang morning trying to stay quiet while every one was sleeping. Gee man I loved that story soooo dang much, I'm crying just thinking about it.
