Massively disappointing given how much it appears to have been rated by others. None of the characters are well drawn and all speak in the same way despite the two main female characters being from completely different backgrounds (one is gentry and the other a whore). Apart from it being set in Edinburgh (and based on a real case) there is no sense of Scotland, no Scots language even in the voices of the servants.

Being Scottish, I enjoyed recognising the local landmarks and hearing more of the way of the city years ago. I think I got to the end around half way through the book, it was a touch too drawn out for me. A very different read from my usual books.
