It is amusing how some writers can go so long and say nothing.
In very beginning, I do provide that may be, just may be, there is audience for this book in some remote corners of the world but anyone who will read it because it is shortlisted for man brooker prize is in for a heavy disappointment
Okay, the tone is conversational, chapters small and it reads light and quick - these things may increasing reading experience but only if there is something worth reading - which is not the case here. The small plot is dragged on and on - you could go through ten chapters with out a single development taking place. You don't feel anything for the cliche characters. Much of it is plainly bad writing - I mean what is whizzy, really? Why did the author loved this word so much? I mean, really, why?
Forgive me for repeating the same remark thrice but perhaps its impact of reading the book - for author is in habit of repeatation. And leave alone worthless details, there are useless characters in it to drag the story. I mean china dogs? denim skirts? Really? Really?

Short listed for the 1998 Man Booker? Must have been a slow year.

Vignette of a unilateral relationship breakup. All the characters are quite sweet and pleasant and I did wish more character layers were peeled back. It felt like something of an older, third-person style with readers held at a distance. That said, it never overstays its welcome. This book captured thoughts and feelings I've rarely seen shared before. The dialogue is witty and the ending was clever, if not quite delivering on all its potential. Definitely a high 3.5!

Disappointing. Nothing happens. Weirdly banal characters who I struggled to engage with. I've read two of her others and loved them but this one not anywhere near as much.
