Beautiful Day

Good "beach read" -- odd that the shifting perspective never made it to the bride and groom. But overall entertaining.

entertaining enough.

Although this book keep me entertained, it was far from one of the best books I've read by Elin Hilderbrand.

I became a big fan of hers in 2020 and 2021 books, So it's kinda fun going back to read her older works.

But... the roles in this book, were so unlikable... and whiny

I’m a sucker for a good chick lit book, and I love that most of Hilderbrand’s books are set on Nantucket. This one, however, included very few likable characters and even less plot development. I would have liked to see at least one chapter from the perspective of the bride and/or groom instead of their family members.

LOVED this book! I think it is one of Hilderband's best ones. If you can, I highly highly recommend you listing to the book on CD the women who reads it is amazing

I feel somewhat bad giving this only two stars, particularly as I finished the book but ... the characters are caricatures. There seems to be little regret over truly regrettable behavior. The marriage of the older couple (though the wife is dead) was just simply perfect, don't you know. And she's now pulling the strings for her younger daughter's wedding, per "the notebook," which might as well be another character. The husband is kind of a schmo! COme on, your former wife is dead. It's not fair to blame that on your current wife. (I'm not giving away any plot points here; this is within the first 3 chapters.)

And frankly, the material excess got to me after a while. Very, very few of us are rich enough to inhabit the Nanctucket world. This wedding was estimated at $170,000 to $180,000. Really? Because we all live in a world where we can spend that much on one stupid wedding weekend.

Sorry: spoiled rich people, many of whom have real problems. But ... nothing rang true.

A summer wedding in Nantucket brings together two families and all their drama. With a special feature being a notebook directing the wedding in detail from the brides deceased beloved mother. The Notebook is quoted throughout the book like a trusty bible of love from the revered mom. Affairs, lies, betrayals, alliances all take place in the one weekend. Very soap operaish.

Her books are always good beach reads. This one didn't hold my attention as much as others, but still enjoyed it at bayside.

My least favorite of all of Elin’s books. When people label her as a “beach read” and write her off as not being deep (which I don’t agree with, I think she’s a wonderful author and a master of the craft of characters), this is the book they’re thinking of. I know most of her books have wealthy characters with not a lot going for them, but this one just took the cake!!! I usually like an unlikable character, because it makes them real, but these unlikeable characters had no redeeming real qualities.

I will say, I’m also very anti-wedding. I eloped myself because I feel like the business of weddings is overdone and we don’t prioritize preparing for marriage over a wedding, so this may have swayed a lot of my opinion. But I’d be pissed it my mom died and all she cared about was leaving me instructions for me wedding. Like come on, how superficial can you BE?! And a lot of the wedding advice was just so dumb.

Hotel Nantucket, 28 Summers, 5 Star Weekend, all had petty wealthy characters but I just thought they were done well and really flushed out and showed true development, which is what I feel like Beautiful Day is missing.

One of my favorites!
