Beautiful Day

Elin Hilderbrand

3.59 AVERAGE

Elin Hilderbrand never fails me. This was not my favorite book of hers, but it was still the escapism I was craving. Jenna Carmichael is getting married on Nantucket. Her sister Margot is her maid of honor. And the wedding has been planned out by her mother. The twist is the plans were made seven years ago as her mother, Beth, was dying of ovarian cancer. The Notebook is sacred to the Carmichael family because it was the last wish from Beth and all in her handwriting. The Notebook is also a source of drama in the story for Pauline, the stepmother to Jenna and Margot. She feels she is living in the shadow of Beth and that Doug, their dad and her current husband is still in love with Beth. Of course he is! I mean she died at a relatively young age and they were very happily married until that happened. I really tried to muster up sympathy for Pauline because Doug is kind of an asshole to her, but she is terrible too.

Margot was the best character in the book, but terribly flawed also. She spends time pining after an unsuitable man and also being the person everyone turns to throughout the wedding weekend. It's the plight of being the oldest sibling - expected to do the right thing and take care of everyone. I enjoyed her character growth and would like a story about her. I know there is a short story Surfing Lesson that features her, but I think she deserves her own novel.

The people in this book were all very flawed, but Elin's storytelling made me want to find out what happens to them all.

Not my favorite Elin book. Margot was annoying to me, not sure why as she is the main character. Love and some major loss. Sweet idea of mom planning the wedding of her youngest daughter on her death bed.

Entertaining story. Good brain break.

Not really my favorite by Elin Hilderbrand, but also not the worst one. It just kind of felt like there wasn’t a lot of plot.

I thought the characters in this book were complex and interesting. Each were fully formed and complicated.

A typical Elin Hilderbrand book.... Filled with love, happiness and Nantucket.

A fine novel, but not memorable. It was an easy story full of barely memorable characters.
