The first attempt to read this book, few month ago, was a failure.
I stopped within 30 pages and the chapter still remains an issue for me (I will explain below).

I tried again this time with the audiobook and it was a way better experience.

It is not quite an ennemies to lovers but we can relate.
Virgin and awakening FMC
Psychopath MMC
Secret societies (along with mafia vibes)
He falls first

Now I have two issues (big ones):
- the first “spice scene” and how it is treated all along the book.
It is basically a rape and a particularly degrading one, it made me really uncomfortable the first time and still do also because it is romanticized all along the book and no it is not.

- the POV of two characters (one chapter each) that give no information whatsoever. These don’t add anything to the story or the other characters. It adds pages but nothing to the plot.

Nevertheless the narrators are really good. So thanks to them.

I can enjoy some pretty dark stuff that makes you have to suspend your feminism to enjoy it.  And the author's forward doesn't obscure anything about what's in the book. She says plainly this is a morally black MMC and the TWs include non con. So i cant complain that i was curious anyways and that's what i found. Dead dove - don't eat, and all that.

But badly written dark stuff? The grammar is atrocious so that on every page there is some awkward line that doesn't technically mean what she clearly means to say. Where are her editors? The info dumping and absurd way people talk/ text to each other is beyond what i can stomach. Such overdramatic wattpad prose. These characters are young college students. So 18,19,20 years old. And I'm sorry but I know what 19 year Olds look like. I can't take any of this seriously. It's all so over the top with the secret societies and rival universities. But also it's USA vs. UK! And the Russian mob! And and and.

And while yes, Dead dove - don't eat. I am loath to see that dark romance, at least for fans of this series and its like, means romanticizing and sexualizing rape. Like on the page, no ambiguity about it, violent rape. With force and crying and threats of death if the FMC doesn't comply. And to use the whole "of well her body reacted to it so she secretly wants it" line of argument is just sick and frankly dangerous. Call me a prude, but I'm not turned on by
women shaking and crying while they're face fucked against their will on pain of being either anally raped or being thrown off a cliff or both.

Taking all of this author's books off my TBR and avoiding all romance recs from anyone who recommends them in the future.

3 out of 5 ☆’s.

I know that RK’s MMCs are always a bit out there (to say the least) but I was just not a fan of Killian’s character. I feel bad for Glyndon for everything that she had to deal with because of him & because she has to put up with him for the rest of their lives. :(

I also wasn’t a fan of the way that Asher was portrayed in this book. I understand that past characters cannot all be perfect parents, but I also don’t think that they should be the main obstacle either?

It’s okay for dark romance but as far as stabby stabby goes there wasn’t enough gore in my personal opinion 😅. Anywho the plot was good. Too many characters to keep up with.

The beginning was a little rough, not gonna lie. But it was definitely worth it.

As much as this book was entertaining, it was very problematic.

I know the author warned us at the beginning of the book that Killian is a real psycho and it is not for the faint of heart so I know what I was getting into. However, there are just too many things that cannot be romanticised in romances (even if they're dark).

Spoilers
I, to be honest, found Killian quite tame. Like he is very much psycho (until he meets Glyndon cus ofcourse) but he is all bark and no bite. The man continues to say shit like 'I will fuck you in his blood' but he never follows up, in any kind of sense. I'm not saying I want him to do that, god no, but I'm just saying he doesn't actually do anything. Apart from raping the mc, which is an issue on a whole other level.

The first time they meet he forces her to a blowjob which is assault but continue the story and she finds it attractive??? Like at some point she even says she knew she wanted him the first moment they met, which is when he assaulted her. I just thinks it makes a joke of people actually getting assaulted.
I get the assault (and rape) is part of him being a psycho but i just hoped it would be handled differently like was the rape and assault necessary to establish him being crazy??

It was entertaining for sure, Kent knows how to write engaging stories that want you to keep reading, I just wished it didn't always have to be this toxic. Leave out the assault (and still make him psycho I guess) and would still be good.
