This book reminded me a lot of a movie I love! I wish there had been more detail on certain aspects of the book and felt some aspects could have had a tiny bit less. Very well written and enjoyed!!

This was just incredible; Solomon manages to grapple with trauma in ways that are deeply familiar and also alien, and manages to show what survival under these horrific conditions might look like. But there's so much going on here on a sociopolitical and interpersonal level, and Solomon does an amazing job of zooming in and out on those conflicts as they are intertwined and also somewhat separate. Aster moving through the world especially is great insight into those systems of power don't work, where they fall apart, and how that happens.

It's brutal (lots of references to rape and descriptions of brutal physical assault,) but there's also so much about what it can mean to move from a dystopia to something more, something better--and how tha work happens, how an uprising happens and when violence happens. But it was so good and I was so invested in the story and its ending.

I enjoyed this book even though it's more dystopian than I typically enjoy. The world-ship & society are vividly portrayed, & characters are interesting. It's not an easy read, set in a space society where slavery and the subjugation of black people is alive and well. Black people live in terrible conditions in lower decks on the space ship. They are expected to report to work daily in the fields or elsewhere (such as working in the radiation-heavy deck of their small sun), and their lives are closely controlled and monitored by white guards watching their every move and doing nightly headcount to make sure everyone is where they're supposed to be.
I enjoyed having a neuro-atypical protagonist & LGBTQ+ characters. Aster is a delightful character who spends most of her time thinking in very literal and straight-forward ways. Her strong understanding of medical science isn't her only useful skill, and her way of thinking helps her crack tough codes and to survive.

Content warnings for suicide, rape, spousal abuse, oppressive abuse, racism, mental illness, loss of a parent, and other topics that may be difficult for some readers.

Raven perched on the top of the fireplace and began to speak: "If you kill me and cook me up, I will be tough and stringy, breaking your teeth. You must have me alive, uncooked."So the man sprinkled salt, rosemary, lemon pepper, and cayenne onto the Raven and swallowed him up whole in one gulp. Once inside the stomach, Raven began flying about the man's body, pecking away, chewing up important parts, until the man died in great agony.Raven flew up the canal of the man's throat and escaped by way of the mouth. He fixed himself a bowl of stew. He thought about how it was good to be back home. The End.
