This book is incredibly engaging and unique. It would be easy to describe it as
slavery but in space
and nothing else but that, but there's so much more to it. Because there's a different hierarchical system in place, it shows new ways people maintain control over others. Additionally, the relationships between the various characters are so complex, and it doesn't take the easy way out of focusing on some sort of romance as a happy ending. Also, side note,
Aster is totally autistic and I really loved getting to see myself in her character in that way.

I really, really enjoyed this book. It was an amazing read, with exceptional characters, some amazing worldbuilding, and flawless emotional undertones. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone and everyone, and then some. My only final comment is that I would imagine that it is pretty trigger-heavy, so keep that in mind if reading.

An impactful book that everyone needs to read.

A space opera that takes place on the ship Matilda that is taking the last of humanity to the Promised Land, but has the upperdeckers treating the lowerdeckers poorly and inhumanely.

We mainly follow Aster who tries to help heal her fellow lowerdeckers as well as find out what her mother Lune's notes mean after her friend, Giselle points out something interesting. She also has a botanarium that she grows plants to help make medicine and has learned from Theo also known as Surgeon.

As the upperdeckers are allowed to wander freely the lowerdeckers need passes to certain areas and if they miss headcount or are caught where they shouldn't be they're punished in many different ways.

There is a Sovereign who rules over the ship and when he dies and another rises the lowerdeckers are even more restricted, punishments even worse, life has become increasingly difficult and miserable, hopeless until Aster has a plan.

There are a few secrets in this book and the relationships between characters dynamic. All characters fleshed out and emotionally charged.

This was a brilliantly written book that again I suggest everyone read as long as you're 14 and older. There are many trigger warnings such as rape, abortion, violence, suicidal ideation, bullying, racism against black people and LGBTQ+ community.

I highly suggest even with those warnings to still read it.
