Few writers evoke such feelings and clarity, a true storyteller, a simple yet artful wordsmith, I'm in love with Larry McMurtry.

Better than Comanche Moon, loved getting more lore... really brutal at times

Probably closer to a 3.5 star book. Took me awhile to get into it and ended strangely, but not in a bad way. It was fun to see Gus and Call as young rangers not yet fully formed. Still falls short of Lonesome Dove but a solid book that makes me look forward to reading Comanche Moon.

I enjoyed this book despite being nowhere near what Lonesome Dove was. I know it’s unfair to compare the other books in this series to that novel, but it will be difficult not to.

It was weird seeing Call and Gus so inexperienced and young but they were still fun to revisit. The story in this book is a lot more action packed than LD, which helped keep it interesting since the book didn’t hold the same weight as LD. I didn’t have quite the same connection to the side characters in this book.

Overall, a fun read within the LD world and I look forward to the other books in this series.

This one's shorter than the rest. The start of Call and McCrae's Ranger days when they were "just pups."
