Well, this was profoundly disgusting. From the writing to characterizations to the plot. And while it's technically short, it felt too long. Probably because I kept wishing for this story to not exist.

I define young adult as late teen, very young adult.  It is not young adult. It is also hardly a modern day retelling of hansel and gretel. I can see the links between the two versions but this version is soooo much more dark and perverted.  Two stars because she does write well and is inventive.

This retelling of Hansel and Gretel was really weird. The synopsis did not prepare me for how dark or disturbing this would be. Also, I really am not sure how I feel about the way the teens speak here. They sound more like what adults expect young people to speak than how they actually do.

This is a Hansel & Gretel retelling where the main characters are dating rather than being siblings. This is a really imaginative recreation of the original story and it was a very interesting read. Hazel (fmc) and Gray (mmc) have been forbidden to date by Hazel’s stepfather so they decide to date in secret. While on one of their dates, they fall asleep and upon trying to find their way back to the city they stumble upon a house in the woods.

They find that the house is actually a “gentleman’s club” (prostitution house) but have no other option than to enter because their phones died and they need to get home. Gray realises the danger of the situation and quickly comes up with a plan to escape the house unharmed that eventually ends in a murder and also him figuring out who murdered his twin brother.

The stepfather is super creepy and Percy towards Hazel, it made me super uncomfortable and the parts that are supposed to be ‘mysteries’ you need to figure out are super predictable which kinda ruined the story. I loved the concept but unfortunately the story just fell a bit flat due to its predictability for me.

TWs/CWs - Smut; Mental illness; Death (brother, past); Cussing; Prostitution; “Gentleman’s club”; Non-consensual drugging; Human trafficking; Acid attack; Murder; Kidnapping; Drug selling/making; Blood

"There's a rough road ahead for Hazel and Gray, Gray knows. But for now, they're just two kids who got lost in the woods."

This was a 26 page story that should be longer. Hansel and Gretel is a relatively dark tale, but this has a creepier and much darker twist. It's quite heavy (trafficking) so would have been better to explore such topics in length. I loved the two characters, definitely Gray realising the situation and getting Hazel out.

I loved Dear Martin, so when I saw this short story retelling on Amazon Prime Reads I had to have it.
This story is so far up my alley that I feel like it was kismet! My favorite thing to read is fairytales and fairytale retellings, and that's what this is!! A retelling of Hansel And Gretel. Oh, how groovy it was though and so different from the original.I definitely like the twist in this one!
I wasn't crazy about the ending though. I wish after all that goodness in the tale, that it would just pack a bigger punch. It actually felt rushed.
If you like twisted little stories, read this one! I've got the whole collection of this series, and am off to read another one now!
