What a boring book, glad I have finished it. All of the characters were insufferable and annoying. I hated Sally Rooneys way of writing, it confused me constantly who I was reading about or who was talking, and why did it feel like every chapter had to have sex involved in some way or other.

A contemplative novel following four young(ish) people searching for beauty and happiness in a modern world which feels sorely lacking in both.

I really enjoyed this book. I guess I understand the “discourse” around Sally Rooney novels - some people adore them/others find them to be too much - but I like her writing. I like how her characters think so deeply and feel so strongly about the world and their relationships. She’s becoming a must read author for me.

Already the characters are annoying. Based on others reviews the character development doesn’t occur.

I really liked the character development from all the characters that we get to see. We know their flaws and what they’re working on. Alice and Eileen are complex and I loved reading their emails to each other and the tension that is shown through them. Felix was sassy but pretty honest about his past. Simon was infuriatingly chill, but also very sweet. Eileen is the queen of self sabotage, I felt bad for her but she was also frustrating. And Alice was mysterious and distant. I like the third person limited omniscient perspective we get in the book. There were still some questions at the end but it was mostly satisfying. Highly recommend this one!

3.5/5. I think the novel excelled when its characters were all together and the author could play with those dynamics. The parts of the book where everyone was scattered made for a less enjoyable reading experience. The framing device of the emails was also strange and I found it only worked in the last two chapters.
